초석(礎石)은 건축에서는 기둥 밑에 기초로 받쳐 놓은 돌을 뜻한다. 일반적인 경우에서는 어떤 사물의 기초를 비유적으로 뜻하는 말이기도 하다.
이러한 초석(礎石)을 영어로는 “Cornerstone”이라고 한다.
