증류(蒸溜/烝溜)는 액체를 가열하여 생긴 기체를 냉각하여 다시 액체로 만드는 일로, 여러 성분이 섞인 혼합 용액으로부터 끓는점의 차이를 이용하여 각 성분을 분리할 수 있다. 이를 영어로는 “Distill”이라고 한다.
“Distill”
- 증류하다, …을 중류하여 …으로 만들다.
- 증류하여 불순물을 제거하다.
- …의 정수를 빼내다, 추출하다.
- 방울방울 듣게 하다.
- 증류되다, 농축되다.
- 방울져 떨어지다, 스며 나오다, 배어 나오다.
이를 영영사전에서는 아래와 같이 설명하고 있다.

- (VERB) To make (a liquid) pure by heating it until it becomes a gas and then cooling it until it is a liquid again, to purify (a liquid) by distillation.

- “We need to distill any impurities first.” (우리는 증류하여 불순물을 없애야만 한다.)

- “We distill whisky out of rye or corn…” (위스키는 초밀이나 수수로 만든다…)
- “This requires novelists to distill a possibly rambling story into a single statement.” (이것은 소설가들이 두서 없는 이야기를 하나의 의견(주장)으로 빼내도록 요구합니다.)
- “Pretty sure it’s illegal to distill liquor in US for personal use.” (확실히 미국에서는 개인적인 사용을 위해 술을 증류하는 것이 불법이다.)
