“Straight and Narrow” 정도(正道), 바른 생활
“Straight and Narrow”이라는 표현을 직역해보면, “좁고 곧은”이라는 말로 옮겨볼 수 있는데, 이는 관용적으로 “정직하고, 바르게 사는 것”을 말한다. 즉, 우리말의 “정도(正道)”에 가까운 표현이다.

이 표현은 성경에 어원을 두고 있다. 마태복음(Matthew) 7장 13-14절에서 나왔다.
- Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
- Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
여기에서 “Straight”과 “Narrow”가 같이 등장했는데, “정도(正道)를 가리킨다.
- “The straight and narrow way is worthy of praise.” (정직한 생활은 칭찬받을 만하다.)
- “His wife is trying to keep him on the straight and narrow.” (그의 아내는 그가 계속 바른생활을 하록 하기 위해 노력하고 있다.)
- “You want to try to put me back on the straight and narrow?” (너는 나를 다시 바른생활로 돌려놓으려고 애쓰고 싶은 거지?)
