사형수(死刑囚)는 사형 선고를 받은 죄수를 가리킨다. 우리나라에서 사형제는 폐지되었지만, 다른 일부 국가에서는 사형제를 유지하고 있다.
“Condemned Prisoner”라는 표현은 이러한 사형수를 가리킨다. “Condemned”은 여러 가지 뜻으로 쓰이는데 법률적으로는 “사형 선고를 받은”이라는 뜻으로 쓰이기도 하기에 사형수를 위와 같이 쓴다.
“Condemned”
- 비난받은, 유죄를 선고받은, 사형수의
- (재산 등이) 수용된, 불량품으로 판정된
- (숙어) 저주받은, 구제할 길 없는
이를 영영사전에서는 아래와 같이 설명하고 있다.
“Condemned”
- (ADJECTIVE) A condemned man or woman is going to be executed.
- (ADJECTIVE) A condemned building is in such a bad condition that it is not safe to live in, and so its owners are officially ordered to pull it down or repair it.
- “Several religious leaders have interceded with the authorities on behalf of the condemned prisoner.” (몇몇 종교지도자들은 사형수를 위하여 당국에 좋게 말해 주었다.)
- “With a mixture of pomposity and sang-froid, a condemned prisoner asked for his last meal to be pheasant (or something).” (거만함과 침착함이 뒤섞인 목소리로 곧 죽을 사형수는 자신의 마지막 식사를 꿩고기로 해달라고 요구했다.)
