쐐기는 물건의 틈에 박아서 사개가 물러나지 못하게 하거나 물건들의 사이를 벌리는 데 쓰는 물건으로 나무나 쇠의 아래쪽을 위쪽보다 얇거나 뾰족하게 만들어 사용한다.
이러한 쐐기를 영어로는 “Wedge”라고 하는데, 이는 명사로 쓰이기도 하고, 동사로 쓰이기도 한다.
명사로는 쐐기 혹은 쐐기 모양의 것을 뜻하고, 동사로는 쐐기를 끼워넣듯이, 좁은 틈 사이에 무언가를 끼워넣거나 밀어넣는 것을 의미한다. 혹은 문 따위를 열리거나 닫힌 채로 움직이지 않게 고정시키는 것을 뜻한다.
