원형질(原形質)은 살아 있는 세포에 들어 있는 유동성 물질을 가리킨다. 이는 세포 내에서 자기 증식, 물질 대사, 운동과 같은 생명 활동의 기초가 된다. 바깥쪽은 원형질막으로 둘러싸여 있으며 대부분의 생물에서는 세포질과 핵으로 분화되어 있다. 무색, 반투명의 콜로이드상으로 젤(gel)과 솔(sol)의 가역적 변화를 나타낸다.
이를 영어로는 ”Protoplasm”이라고 쓴다.
