“Insulate”라는 영어 단아거 있는데, 이는 동사로 쓰이는 단어로 단열이나, 절연, 방음 처리를 하는 것을 뜻한다. 건물에 특정한 기능을 더하기 위해서 처리하는 경우에 쓰인다.
혹은 사람을 불쾌한 경험이나 영향으로부터 보호하거나 격리하는 것을 뜻하기도 한다.
