민들레는 국화과의 여러해살이풀이다. 원줄기는 없고 이른 봄에 뿌리에서 깃 모양으로 깊이 갈라진 잎이 배게 난다. 높이 30cm 정도의 꽃줄기 끝에 누런 꽃이 4~5월에 두상(頭狀) 화서로 피는데 밤에는 오므라든다. 씨는 수과(瘦果)로 흰 갓털이 있어 바람에 날려 멀리 퍼진다. 잎은 식용하고 꽃 피기 전의 뿌리와 줄기는 한방에서 땀을 내게 하거나 강장(強壯)하는 약으로 쓴다. 한국, 중국 등지에 분포한다.
민들레를 영어로는 “Dandelion”이라는 말로 쓰인다.
