“Prohibitive”는 크게 두 가지의 뜻으로 쓰인다. 하나는 “Prohibit”의 형용사적인 의미로 “법으로 금지하는”이라는 뜻으로 쓰이고, 다른 하나는 무언가가 엄두도 못 낼 정도로 비싼 것을 가리킨다.
“Prohibitive”
- (가격, 비용이) 엄두도 못 낼 정도로 비싼
- (법으로) 금지하는
이를 영영사전에서는 아래와 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다.
“Prohibitive”
- So high that people are prevented from using or buying something.
- Almost certain to perform, win, etc. in the expected way.
- (Formal) Stopping people from using or doing something.
- “The price of property in the city is prohibitive.” (그 도시의 부동산 가격은 엄두도 못 낼 정도로 비싸다.)
- “The cost can be prohibitive, especially when considered on a national scale.” (그 비용은 특히 전국적인 규모로 고려될 때 엄청나게 비쌀 수 있습니다.)
- “They think that they are very onerous and prohibitive.” (그들은 매우 힘이들고 어렵다고 생각했다.)
