“Contend”라는 단어는 동사로 쓰이는 단어이다. 격식체로 쓰이기도 하는데, 언쟁 중에 주장하는 것을 뜻한다. 혹은 무언가를 얻으려고 다투거나 겨루는 것을 의미하기도 한다.
